SOUNDFIELD DSF-2 MICROPHONE WINS STAR AWARD
Editor of TV Technology Europe Confers Award At IBC 2006

Amsterdam, September 2006: At IBC 2006, representatives of the UK microphone manufacturer SoundField were presented with a STAR award from the Editor of TV Technology Europe for their recent digital DSF-2 microphone system. The STAR Award is designed to celebrate and showcase the pre eminent technological innovations available to the broadcast industry, and TV Technology Europe's Editor chose the DSF-2 as one of the winners.

"STAR — Superior Technology Award Recipient — awards are given to interesting new products that help a user save money or accomplish a task in an easier way," said Mark Hallinger, Editor of TV Technology Europe. "The products selected help advance the industry. Some were chosen because of technical novelty or innovation, some because they filled an important gap in the production or transmission chain, and some because they were just cool products."

The DSF-2 is the first SoundField microphone system in which all processing is carried out digitally. Like other SoundField mics, it captures audio and outputs it in the proprietary four-channel SoundField B-Format, which may be decoded using SoundField hardware or software to mono, stereo, stereo M&S, or surround sound in a variety of formats including 5.1, 6.1 and 7.1, simultaneously if required. By manipulating the B Format signals, the effect of changing the polar pattern or the orientation of the microphone can be realistically achieved, all without physically altering or moving the mic itself. The DSF-2 microphone may also be used at distances in excess of a kilometre from its broadcast vehicle, which makes it well suited to High Definition outside broadcast applications where output in the 5.1 Surround HD audio standard is required. Indeed, the DSF-2 was specified to provide simultaneous 5.1 and stereo ambience for HD broadcasts from all 12 stadiums at the 2006 soccer World Cup in Germany. In the UK, Sky Sports have now permanently installed the DSF-2 at several top football stadiums throughout the country, so that it can perform the same function for their coverage of UK Premiership games.

“It’s a pleasure to receive this STAR award,” says Ken Giles, Managing Director of SoundField. “It took around four years of R&D to bring the DSF-2 to market. During that period, we worked closely with some of the world’s most prominent broadcasters to create the ideal front end for broadcasting audio in HD 5.1 Surround. It’s good to see our efforts being recognised. Thank you to everyone at TV Technology Europe, from all of us at SoundField.”
