I LOVE RADIO. There I said it. I have been a radio fan since I first heard the Beatles on WLS Chicago in 1964. I’ve had lots of different radios over the years and as I’ve gotten older I been wanting something better than the plastic junk I see in stores. I’ve heard the Bose and Tivoli and they are expensive! A favorite of mine, the GE Super Radio, is low cost, has a great tuner but doesn’t sound very good. I was at CES and heard this Music Hall Radio RDR-1 in the "high end" suites and was knocked out. What an amazing radio and for only $200!

It is by far the best overall deal I’ve heard or seen to date in AM/FM radios. I bought one for myself right away and think this is perfect for the office or studio lounge room. It’s a beautiful compact package in a high gloss black cabinet, so it looks great too (much better than those other expensive radios in my opinion). The front panel has black anodized finish with simple controls that can’t get too messed up. The buttons are clear and easy to read so everyone can “make it work” right away. It even has a remote! It comes in silver and black, but I saw the silver one and this black one looks much better to me, so that’s what we stock.

ABOUT THE TUNERS: The Music Hall RDR1 has both AM and FM synthesized tuners with a rotary dial, a scan button and 5 presets --a nice touch. The presets accept AM or FM so I can have a couple of FM and a couple of AM stations on preset without having to switch bands. Both the AM tuner and FM tuner are excellent, very impressive. They pulled in all the stations available here immediately. I had the unit in LA as well and was amazed at the number of good sounding stations I could get with this radio. The RDR1 has internal AM and FM antennas so I didn’t need any external antenna whatsoever (although one comes with it via a BNC connector), which is perfect. I hate having to have all those extra FM antenna wires and junk hanging all over just to get a station to come in. Even the scan button is set to the right sensitivity so it doesn’t stop constantly on noise- this scan stops on listenable stations! There is also a mono button so that can help in weak FM areas as well.

The Music Hall tuner also has the Radio Data System [RDS] built in so if a station is broadcasting information (like the song title and artist) it will be displayed in the very nice easy to read large backlit display. I liked this display. It’s a pale blue with brightness settings on its own button so you can turn it completely off if you use it bedside; a sleep timer is also nice for listening to Art Bell on Coast to Coast late night! There’s a clock and alarm too so it can be used as a radio wake up alarm if you want-it even has a snooze function. When you turn the radio off, the display reverts to the clock, and the clock can be set to 24hr time or 12 hour time.

THE SOUND: The Music Hall RDR1 Radio has a small mono speaker mounted in the front panel, protected by a wire mesh so you can’t accidentally damage it. Its mounted in a real ported, tuned enclosure, and sounds like a million bucks. This radio sounds far better than any of these little table radios I have heard to date and makes my GE Super Radio sound horrible. I think it sounds as good if not better than the Bose or Tivoli. For $200, I’ll take the Music Hall! An individual electronic bass and treble control helps make it sound even better than flat: I have mine set at +3 bass and the treble at +4. Sounds really good, no noise, no hiss, really nice fidelity. There’s a front panel stereo headphone jack if you like headphones. While it is a stereo tuner, it is only a mono speaker in the radio. There is a aux input jack to so if you have an iPod, or other portable media device, or a XM/Sirius tuner you can plug it straight in via a mini jack.

All in all, I can’t say enough good things about the Music Hall RDR1. Try one and I now you’ll love it.
