A Message from Geoff regarding changes made to
the Mic Pre EQ Over the Years

Clarification

I see a bunch of questions re the difference between Mic-Pre/EQ Versions.

The original units that were made between 1994 and 2001 used a concentric switch-pot custom made for us by CTS (US). It was a large, robust piece, available in two pole-five positions.

By 2001, after all of the corporate mergers and acquisitions, the CTS parts were no longer available to us. Not available meaning that between the price more than doubling and minimum quantities increasing, we would have to lay out almost $200,000 in advance.

The next switch was made by Lorlin in the UK. It was available as a two pole-six position, which allowed us to add a fifth frequency to each band, making the mids overlapping, and adding 20kHz to the top, and 30 Hz to the bottom.

Because we then had to use a separate pot (still CTS), there was not enough panel space to have the multi frequency filters, so now they are 50 Hz and 20 kHz.

The rest of the unit is the same Class “A”, discrete, transformer based circuitry from the original. This goes for all of the console modules also.

Regarding the console modules, the first 250 were made with the Lorlin switches. The gain switch is a single pole-11 position version. About 5% of these switches failed. The symptom was that, if you pulled up on the shaft, the gain went down to minimum, or worst case, became intermittent. We have not had any of the two pole, frequency selector switches fail.

In the above cases, we replaced them with the NKK’s, with 100% success. There is now an adapter board to retrofit this switch to older units.

Beginning this Spring, we will be using a new switch made by NKK (Japan). The likelihood of getting from point “A” to point “B” in a Miata is much greater than in a TR6.

If you are a registered owner (we don’t fix stolen ones), and you have a problem with a gain switch, contact us at 302-658-7003, or geoff@daking.com
