Sound engineer and freelance musician, Dug McGuirk, Thru The Din Productions, finds the Daking processors have great "air."
NEW YORK, NEW YORK: Freelance sound engineer and musician Dug McGuirk of Thru The Din Productions is at home on either side of the studio glass. Learning to engineer after being frustrated by others not understanding his musical ideas, McGuirk says that he can understand where bands are coming from and can help them realize their vision. And to help him meet that goal, McGuirk has been using a number of discrete Class A signal processors from Geoffrey Daking & Co.
Commenting on the Daking Mic/Pre EQ, McGuirk says, "The Daking mic preamps are great for voiceovers, I find. They have great 'air' about them, and they're not overly colored on the low end. I wouldn't categorize them as super warm - I find the top end very crisp and sparkly. So for voiceovers they're great. I also like them on drum overheads."
He is equally impressed with the performance of the Daking FED Compressors. "I'm a big fan of compression, and I find it to be extremely musical," he says of the Daking unit. "I put them across the stereo bus but they're also great for room. Overall, they're very versatile and do a plethora of functions."
"But because they're so musical," he continues, "I've always found them to be a great utility as well. If I need to soften something up or tighten it up, they seem to be able to do both rather well." Professing to find the sound of the Daking preferable to a much-revered classic British device, he adds, "I find them to be idiot-proof and very user friendly."
McGuirk reveals that he has known about the Daking devices for a few years. "I initially got turned onto them by a friend of mine, Joe Franco." McGuirk and Franco, the original drummer with Twisted Sister, have been producing the music for the PBS children's series, "Between the Lions" at Franco's Beatstreet Productions in Manhattan's Flat Iron district. McGuirk was formerly a staff engineer and producer for Rick Wake, the Grammy Award-winning producer who has worked with Mariah Carey, Celine Dion and Jennifer Lopez.
McGuirk, in turn, has recommended them to some of the people with whom he works. "I enjoy them so much that I recommended them to Moby. And he's trusting my judgement."
Recent engineering and mixing projects for McGuirk have included several new bands, including Two Skinny Jays and Jive Jones. He also recently completed the mixes for some of the music for the new Gwyneth Paltrow film, "A View from the Top."
