THE BEST IN THE WORLDATC Speakers ( Click Here for a more detailed article) British high fidelity loudspeakers were the best in the business in the 1950s through the 1970s. By 1980, the industry swung away from the esoteric, employing cost-cutting engineering compromises in order to bring high fidelity speakers to the masses. ATC is a modern British company that didn’t go with the flow. Their design innovations, research into new materials, and engineering decisions have but one goal – to make a better sounding loudspeaker regardless of cost. This is more important than ever to the recording and mastering engineer since contemporary music production has grown in complexity. Being able to hear the tiniest details, good and bad, is the only way to assure that your listeners will hear your final product as you intend for it to be heard. Over years, ATC has quietly moved ahead of its competitors by actively developing and implementing solutions that substantially improve performance. Here’s a quick look at some of the important issues in loudspeaker design and how ATC addresses them.
• Linearity, Frequency, and Phase ResponseThe goal of a good driver is highly linear excursion of the diaphragm throughout the full frequency range over which it’s intended to be used. In order to build a long-excursion driver capable of handling high power and producing high sound levels, ATC designs and builds their drivers from the ground up. ATC’s magnet and voice coil assembly employs a short coil in a long, linear magnetic field. A side benefit of this design is excellent heat dissipation. ATC’s speaker cones are made of a heavily damped space age fabric sandwich designed to eliminate broad resonances that cause coloration. Accurate drivers deliver smooth and even frequency response without the need for equalization and its associated phase anomalies.
• Dispersion, Directivity, and Sweet SpotThe relationship between direct and reflected sound is important in our perception of spaciousness and depth. To produce a good reverberant field, you must start with good sound hitting the reflective surfaces. ATC’s soft dome drivers provide wide horizontal dispersion over which the frequency response is smooth, resulting in a broad listening area as well as uniform relationship between direct and reflected sound. The soft dome driver technology is used across the full ATC product line so you’ll get the same smooth response and even dispersion regardless of the size of loudspeaker that best fits your listening space. • Dynamic RangeThe dynamic range of a speaker is largely a function of the driver construction.
ATC’s vented motor assembly minimizes power compression by keeping the voice coil’s electrical resistance from changing as a result of heating. In conventional drivers, this resistance change causes a type of dynamic compression which often leads to dull sound after a long session. The amplifiers used in ATC powered speakers are sized appropriately for the drivers and deliver all the power required without clipping. Super fast, non-intrusive FET limiters are included to protect the drivers, not to modify the speaker’s dynamic characteristics.
"They're killer speakers- all my clients love them, and they make me a better engineer" F Reid Shippen
"You were right... it's a year and a half later, and i cant imagine living without these speakers. one of the best choices of my career. my work has never been so consistent, my clients never so happy. Thanks,"
Mike Roskelly, The Pod
"The traditional way of doing things was to mix, then take a reference home
or listen in the car. I don't really need to do that anymore, because I find
I'm not second-guessing the process as much, which helps me move faster.”
Kevin McNoldy, Crystalphonic Studios
"I produced Sky Farm, mixed three films and a number of commercials all on the ATCs and everything has translated beautifully. So my confidence level is extremely high! With the 100s I find the imaging is breathtaking. The soundfield is so defined and exactly the way it is on the sound stage. I also find the 'sweet spot' is wide both vertically and horizontally making it great for my clients and artists to also enjoy the sound equally over a fairly wide area. These speakers somehow maintain the same relationship between low, mid and high frequencies at all volumes better than any speaker I've worked on. If I was mixing a record, the vocal sound, characteristic and position in the mix stays exactly the same - dead on from quiet to earthshaking room volumes." Steve Kempster

 | | | SCM16A (pr)
These are the least expensive ATC active pro speaker. A sealed box 2 way uses a new CLD in house built woofer, ultra low resonance cast aluminum sealed 20 liter cabinet, in house built bi amp amplifier package integrated into the back of the speaker. Other controls include a bass compensation (up to 6dB of boost around 100Hz) and input sensitivity adjust. Good for about 106dB long SPL. Not as much resolution as the SL equipped active 20's but excellent phase response and a great sounding monitor for production use.

| | | | | SCM20ASL (pr)
This is the gold standard of two ways, offering the lowest distortion and highest clarity of any 2 way, with excellent behavior around crossover point (higher than typical at 2.8K). It usses the one of kind 6" SL driver, with integrated soft dome, built by hand at ATC, loaded in ATC's cast aluminum sealed enclosure for predictable low end behavior. These speakers do not offer a port to boost bass response, but instead offer a sealed box that delivers a steady roll off at about 100Hz on down. These are the favorite of classical engineers and folks who own larger ATC's and demand that midrange clarity in the smallest possible box. About 108 dB SPL long term, internal amps and FET limiters.

| | | | | SCM25A (pr)
This is the latest speaker from ATC, offering the famous ATC mid dome and 3 way set up in the smallest possible footprint. It is a 6 inch active three way, with ATC's unusual "away from the vocals" crossover points of 380Hz to the woofer and 3.8KHz to the tweeter. ATC's famous mid dome is unique, often copied, but never equalled! They sound like "baby 150s" and are popular with mixers and tracking engineers both. We highly recommended them for the lowest cost way to get "the ATC sound" for a smaller studio or traveling engineer. See our quotes about the 25s from Ed Cherney, Lenny Kravitz, Paul Hager, Peter Stengaard and more.

| | | | | SCM50ASL (pr)
This is the 9 inch active three way and a good solution for someone looking for more SPL and a smaller box. A 50 liter cabinet, the 50's can be used vertically or horizontally with the movable tweeter plate. ATC's in house built exclusive SL woofer inside the 50 offers up to 25dB LESS 3rd harmonic distortion compared to conventional woofer designs. Since woofers are the source of most masking distortion in a loudspeaker, the improvement in "hearing what's wrong" is enhanced significantly by ATC's SL technology. The mid dome is the "S" high power version, uniquie to 50's an above. We have many top people, such as Niko Bolas, using ATC 50s as nearfields. They work well in that configuration and will play loud at 112dB long term.

| | | | | SCM100ASL (pr)
ATC's 12 inch three way is a very nice compromise between increased low end performance compared to the 50, and a still portable size. One of the best things about ATC 50/100/150 is that they all sound the same, with the exception of the low end extension and maximum SPL, so you are free to pick the size that works best in your room. The 100's are popular with film mixers where a LFE channel is present, and many well known scoring mixers use the 100s exclusively. A 100LCR set up with 50's in the rear is an awesome 5.1 rig.

| | | | | SCM150ASL (pr)
This is what we think is ATC's best deal: the widest bandwidth and their best sound combined with relative affordability in a 3 way. The 150s sound awesome by themselves and can be set up as an in-wall if you prefer or as a mid-field on stands. Several mastering engineers use 150s, including the incredible Doug Sax with his 5 speaker 150 rig in Ojai, California. George Massenburg bought these from me for equipping his unique "infinite reflection" room at Blackbird Studios in Nashville. We recommend 150s to someone looking for the best possible sound. One word of caution: they are BIG, like smaller refrigerators, and are more than 2 feet deep! So if you need in wall mounting, you may want to keep reading below.

| | | | | SCM110ASL (pr)
Designed for both stereo and multi-channel applications that feature a dedicated center channel and subwoofer system, the new low-profile SMC 110A comprises twin 9-inch ATC SL bass drivers, an ATC 3-inch soft dome mid and a soft dome one-inch tweeter. This is the most affordable of the "shallow mount" or "soffit mount" ATC speakers. The SCM110's are like double woofer 50's, with an amp pack mounted to the back of the speaker (like the 50/100/150). The amp can be wall mounted if you prefer. 110s sound amazing for the money and are an ideal in-wall solution for a smaller room where better sight lines through windows and below obstructions are needed.

| | | | | SCM200ASL (pr)
This is the dual 12 inch 3 way, soffit shallow-mount studio speaker. The speaker is very much like a dual woofer 100, but with a remote amp. The 200 uses a P4-- a rack mounted amp with internal crossovers, FET limiters and power amplifiers-- for each cabinet. The power amp is variable speed fan cooled so it is envisioned that this will be mounted in a machine room. A cable up to 30Meters long can be supplied at extra cost.

| | | | | SCM300ASL (pr)
This is our most popular in-wall speaker and what you would see at East West Studios in LA or Blackbird Studios in Nashville. This is what a major room would install to attract major clients. It is a dual 15" woofer 3-way complete with 2 P4 amplifiers, and unlike other "bigs" it is a speaker you can mix on. This speaker outperforms everything in its price class due to the incredible drive units and electronics, all built by ATC in the factory in Stroud UK.

| | | | | Sub1/15Pro (ea)
Far different from the typical subwoofer. the ATC uses the giant motor of the ATC "SL" 15 inch woofer. This sub offers the lowest distortion of any sub on the market and amazing definition. A special sub amp pack is fitted to enable the huge peaks of low end demanded by film or music. Inside the amp pack is a Low Pass Filter you can tune to roll off high frequencies (rather than inserting a crossover which introduces a phase issue at a critical spot in the frequency band). Run your mains full range and blend in the ATC 15" sub for amazing response down to 28Hz. If you want a bit more low end output, we can build special vented versions of this sub or we can build multiple 15 versions, such as we did for Blackbird (triple 15 subs are built into the wall below the ATC 300s in Blackbird Studio "F"). When you want to know exactly what is happening below 100 Hz, this is your sub!

| | | | | PA65 Active PA Speaker (ea)
ATC custom builds many special systems for discerning club owners who want lower distortion to keep customers in the club longer. The PA65 is a good example for the type of thing we can build for your room, a live version of an active ATC 150. It uses the same mid but has a higher power tweeter and a different woofer designed for this application. Dispersion is extremely wide for more even coverage in a room. PA65's are the best sound reinforcement speaker you'll ever hear with built in power, crossovers and FET limiters. We built a variant of this speaker for Disney Hall, but we worked on cosmetics to make it absolutely beautiful, since the speaker would be very visible to the audience. If you are interested in a special design, want studio level sound for your room, contact TransAudio Group to get your needs addressed by the ATC engineering team. We love custom work!
