LONDON, ENGLAND: Located in the prestigious London neighborhood of Mayfair, close to Buckingham Palace, the Aura Kitchen and Bar holds the honor of being the first boutique bar/club to receive a custom ATC (Acoustic Transducer Company) speaker system. Based on the U.K. manufacturer's renowned SCM300 studio monitors, the fully active loudspeaker systems at Aura have been delivered in four custom-designed towers that have been specially finished to match their upmarket surroundings.

The three-way, fully active ATC speaker systems at the Aura Kitchen and Bar, a restaurant and lounge bar located below the Caviar House on St. James Street, are based upon the company's top of the range SCM300 monitors, with an additional 15-inch subwoofer. Each speaker tower, designed to fit into a small footprint, incorporates a pair of ATC Super Linear 15-inch drivers, a single three-inch Soft Dome mid-range driver, and a 1.25-inch fabric dome tweeter, and is paired with an active 15-inch subwoofer in a sealed enclosure. Eight additional 15-inch passive bass reflex subwoofers are built into the venue's banquet seating.

Each main tower, which individually offer ±80 degrees of horizontal, coherent dispersion with ±10 degrees in the vertical plane, is powered by ATC three-channel Class A/B amplifiers, which deliver 275 watts into each bass driver, 200 watts into the mid-range, and 100 watts to the tweeter, and are capable of a maximum SPL of 120dB. All amplifier channels feature active momentary gain reduction. Crossover frequencies are set at 380Hz and 3.5kHz. An ATC 600-watt amplifier drives each of the four subwoofers.

Flown loudspeakers would not have matched the interior décor at Aura, which captures the ambience of the New York lounge scene with comfortable furnishings, tinted mirrors, themed color schemes, subtle lighting, and crystal chandeliers that formerly lit the ballroom at the nearby Claridges Hotel. The ATC speakers were therefore ordered in floor-standing towers that are finished in striking piano black lacquer with aluminum detailing.

Aura, opened in April 2003 by a group of friends led by David Serlui, with design overseen by Rupert Meeker (co-founder of the funky label, Buddhist Punk), is a dual-purpose venue that incorporates tables that may be hydraulically lowered after the kitchen closes to accommodate the late-night cocktail crowd. The business also encompasses a record label that makes available to the public the sophisticated European and Latin music for which the Aura Kitchen and Bar has become renowned.

ATC's drivers are manufactured in-house to exacting tolerances and are legendary for their many design innovations, such as the company's renowned Soft Dome midrange driver, which achieves exceptionally broad and even dispersion to produce a flat response anywhere in the room. Situated in Aston Down in rural Gloucestershire, England, ATC was established in London in 1974 by acoustics engineer and musician Bill Woodman.
